Hello Summer!!
The past couple of days have been super toasty. Summer has arrived early here in the Inland Northwest. I know that some of you experience warmer temps for most of your summer, but 90+ temps here are hard to bare, especially this early into Summer.
Race day on Sunday was also toasty. Thankfully, the race was ran along a lake a little over an hour from our place. The cooler breeze helped cool us off. I will say it was one of the more fun races I have done, and there was nothing special about it. Very small, only 300+ runners for both the 5k and 10k.
The view was amazing though. I love lake Pend Oreille. The 5k followed an out and back on a dirt trail, that was a little rocky. After the out and back on the dirt trail, the 10k enjoyed a paved out and back along the back side of the lake. We followed the lake for nearly all of the race, so it was mostly flat.
The best part of the race was jumping in the lake afterwards to cool off.
The kids then enjoyed a great swim after the awards ceremony. Turns out Baby R loves the water and was all smiles.
We arrived with about 30 minutes to race start, so I had time to breast feed, slather on some sunscreen and pin my bib. It was my sisters first race in over 4 years. She did the 5k and was third in her age group.
Our 10k started about 5 minutes before the 5k. I took off with a couple of guys and kept them in sight, slowly trying to reel them in. Can I just say racing with family is so fun!! Love having them at the finish.
For the first half, we enjoyed lake views and lots of shade on the dirt trail. Footing was important, and I almost tripped I don’t know how many times. I felt like I was running through the forest though, which is always my happy place.
- Mile 1: 6:29 Mile 2: 6:30 Mile 3: 6:26
After the out and back, and seeing Cassie, giving her a hoot and a holler, we hit some pavement after a small incline and started the second out and back. I caught the second place dude at mile 3 and we ran with one another for a mile. He was huffing and puffing and in pain. I could tell he didn’t want me to beat him, and was giving it his all to stay with me.
First place wasn’t too far ahead of us. I finally pushed forward without him, and tried reeling first place in. After the turn around, I kept moving closer and closer to the first place guy. He was in clear sight, and I could tell was losing steam.
- Mile 4: 6:17 Mile 5: 6:18 Mile 6: 6:21 last .36 – 2:16
The last half mile seemed easy and the first place male only finished 15-20 seconds before me. I needed a little more mileage to catch him. My family cheered me through the finish (kuddos to Marc for watching a toddler and two babies under 1). I loved seeing all the young kids participate in the 5k and even a few in the 10k.
Finishing time: 40:38, 6:24 average for 6.36 miles.
I was first overall female, and second overall. They had some fun age group prizes and overall finisher awards. There was a silent auction, and some great post race swimming on the beach.
The male I passed, asked for my photo “so he could remember the girl who put a dagger in his side.” It was a little awkward. He was one of those manly guys, all buff, who I knew hated the fact he lost to a girl. Marc called it. Loved talking with the racers and enjoyed some fun in the sun before grabbing a quick bite to eat and heading back home.
It’s really a fun lake town. Of course I grabbed some local fudge and huckleberry ice cream before leaving. I am a sucker for chocolate and huckleberry anything. It was a fun spontaneous race I did “with” my sister. We made a fun family day of it. I wasn’t even too competitive either. I actually raced for “fun” and didn’t push myself too crazy like. 😉
Hope everyone’s weekend was fun. Stay hydrated out there!!
