Rapid Rabbit Race Recap

March 24, 2014 Bryanna

Another weekend flew by, with yet another race!!

Marc and I did a shorter distance race. I haven’t done anything shorter than a half marathon since 2013, last June. It’s definitely a different challenge racing shorter distances. My body definitely isn’t used to the shorter distances at faster paces. It was great to throw a 5 miler into the mix.

A local high school put on a 5 miler and 5k race on Saturday called the Rapid Rabbit. The 5 miler is a qualifier for Bloomsday’s Second Seed, so naturally there were a lot of people there trying to make the qualifying time for second seed. The women’s time for second seed qualifying for my age group was 37 minutes.

Since I haven’t been feeling so hot lately, my goal was to do under 37 minutes so I can run second seed at Bloomsday (it’s a huge race with 60,000 people, so being in Second Seed means you don’t have to be in later start times weaving through thousands of people). I woke up feeling better than I have, so I aimed for a 6:30 pace, but i would have liked a 6:15 pace.

The first couple miles I felt great. I was hitting my goal pace, but I definitely had to pee. I could see the lead men, and I could see my husband (he had to run 31 minutes for his qualifying time). By mile 3 I was scouting out possible places to pee, but there wasn’t any.

I finished 3 miles in 19:21. It was mostly flat, with some smaller hills, and a nice hill leading to the finish. Didn’t appreciate that. By mile 4 I was starting to fade, but I kept pushing. Having to pee was making it harder to run. My last mile was definitely my slowest.

I finished in 32:32, a new 5 mile PR and an average pace of 6:27. I was the first overall female, and 7th overall. Marc finished second in his age group and 4th overall in 31:17. He did awesome.

I don’t know why I looked pissed in this picture. This is probably the nicest 1st place trophy I have ever won.

After the race we immediately did a 2 mile cool down, and I still hadn’t peed. It was a slow 2 mile cool down and to the bathroom I sprinted.

It was a great morning for a run too!! Sun was shining and I didn’t need long sleeves. it was a bit breezy. After the race it was time for food and a shower.

Sunday we enjoyed a 16 miler, with the sunshine. We got up early to finish it before church. After church we went and hung out with my sister’s family, and my nephew wanted to show his amazing golfing skills.

For 23 months, his short game is better than mine.

Hope you  had a great weekend!! It’s less than a month until Boston, and I am hoping it feels like Spring over on the east coast (like it does here).

Until next time Be Whole and Be Fit!!
