Goodbye 2013 and Hello 2014!!
That seems to be the theme for so many of us. There was so much greatness in my 2013, especially in the realm of my running. With new PR’s to runs and relays in new states with amazing women, my 2013 in running was great.
There were those days of completely wanting to never run again and retiring my running shoes forever, but they were always clouded by the amazing friendships I made through running and the amazing feelings and accomplishments that came with running.
It’s hard to cover all my running favorites of 2013, because believe me there were so many. So here’s my link up from Miss Zippy in a very condensed version (you can share yours too by clicking here).
- Best race experience: I would have to say that my best race experience was my first ultra Ragnar Relay in Utah. This was such an amazing race for various reasons. It was challenging for sure (with the lack of sleep and the high elevations), but it also offered amazing views and new great friendships. I ran with 5 other strangers who were amazing and now are considered great friends. The camaraderie at this race was like no other. Being apart of a team is an experience hard to match.
- Best run: Any run on the trails is always a great run!! Even though they are tough, the scenery and quiet is so worth it. I enjoyed many morning runs with my former employer’s dog, Piper, on the trails, watching great sunrises. I always feel strong on these runs and love being lost in the run, hearing only my footsteps.
- Best new piece of gear: I love my Brooks Nightlife Jacket. This has been great for those early morning runs and evening runs, especially during the late fall and winter months. It keeps me visible, while offering protection against the elements. I also have to add my roll recovery. It is definitely an essential part of my running routine!! I would recommend getting one if you ever do an ultra relay or if you ever do a marathon.
- Best piece of running advice received: There’s been many new pieces of advice for me. I would have to say that for this year, my best piece of advise was “take it easy.” I ran through many injuries this year with high mileage. The urging of my doctor friend and physical therapist helped me to “take it easy.” Their words: “If you want to be running 20 years for now, or even 10, you better start taking it easy. Give your body the rest it needs. You’re not going to get any slower.” Honestly, these words have helped me realize the bigger picture.
- Most inspirational runner: There are so many inspiring runners in my life, from those I know personally to those I only know of. So many individuals with great stories of overcoming so much!! I would have to say Lisa at runwiki wins this award. She is the most inspirational runner I have ever personally met. She battles migraines that cause severe back and neck pain, while raising 3 kids (twins included) and she still finds the strength and time to run. Watching her on our Ragnar Relay in Utah was so inspiring. True grit. She epitomizes strength and determination.
- If I could sum up my year in a couple of words, they would be: You know me, summing up anything in a couple of words is hard. With such an amazing year in running, it’s hard to find only a few words to describe it. I am definitely not a women of few words (ask my husband 😉 ). Here they be: The difficulties, pain and challenges of running were meant by new friendships, great racing experiences and new goals.
Here’s to a great year in running in 2014!! It will definitely be hard to beat this past year.I hope your 2013 was a year to remember.
