There’s no simple way of putting it, but we could all do a little more this 2016 to make it a healthier year. Or at least I know I can. You all know my goals for 2016 in running and in my health. I am not much for resolutions, but more focus on goals and lifestyle changes. My aim is to make 2016 a better year in more ways than one. It first starts with changing my mindset, which is why I chose two words to live by in the New Year.
Once my mindset is in it, I can take action. For me having more joy entails being healthy. Everyone’s version of healthy may be different, but we can all agree we can do a little more to be healthier. So I thought I’d share a fun project that Chobani is doing in order to inspire more fitness and healthier selves. They call it “crunching the numbers.” Just simple ways of burning a 100 calories here and there throughout the day, and most of the ideas require little to no effort really.
First, I wanted to share my ways of “crunching the numbers.” I received a Fitbit for Christmas from my parents. It’s been awesome in showing me how active or inactive I am in a day. It also is a gentle reminder to get up and move more. There are days when I don’t reach the recommended 10,000 steps a day, and then other days I do upwards of 20,000 steps.
Now I am not saying we have to being doing 10,000 steps a day, but we could all make a goal to get up and move more. With it being winter it may be a little more difficult to be outside in the cold weather for some of us, but sometimes the kids like playing in the snow, and it’s a great way to crunch some numbers. Sledding, snow ball fights, building snow forts or snowmen and ice skating are all great ways to burn a few extra calories and they are fun. R loves sledding, and I get a few extra steps in climbing those hills. 😉
Or maybe it’s doing an extra mile or extra 5 minutes on the treadmill. A few pushups and crunches. Even shoveling snow works. Here’s more ways from Chobani to burn some calories:
Also, using the Fitbit I can track my calories and water intake. I don’t track calories, because I find there’s no need to for me, but it is useful to see how much I am snacking and on what. I also like to make sure I am getting enough water. Cutting out processed junk foods, sugars, and trans fat helps to crunch the numbers and eliminates empty calories. Drinking more water is a great way to detoxify the body, stay hydrated, help with digestion and eases constipation. We just don’t have to be more active to live healthier, cutting empty calories is actually just as important.
Replacing the unhealthy, sugar laden snacks with healthy, calorie dense foods is another option to being a healthier you in 2016. Choosing fresh fruits over sodas, juices, candies and sweets, eating fresh vegetables with hummus, snacking on nuts and homemade trailmix, crackers and cheese, and Greek yogurts.
Chobani makes great yogurt, some of my favorite. Their brand is lower in sugar and calories, but have the healthy fats necessary for great skin, hair, brain health and fighting inflammation, plus probiotics for a healthier gut. Their new product in 2016 is Chobani Simply 100 Crunch (the reason behind this whole crunch the numbers). Great flavors like Blueberry Cookie Crunch, Mango Cone Crunch, and Strawberry Chocolate Truffle, and only 7 grams of sugar!! What’s not to love about that?! Only non-GMO ingredients are used, and naturally sweetened.
