Thursday Talk it Out with Bryanna is here!
Mariah left you all in suspense a few weeks ago about my health. I am doing fine now and thankful to finally be back to my normal, exhausted mom self! Thank you Mariah for your wonderful race recap on your first half marathon. Wouldn’t you agree that Mariah finds humor in all situations! At least she makes me laugh all the time. We are all proud of her! Make sure you give her a virtual high five! I am glad she is going to train better in her next half marathon though 😉
Yes – the rumors are true, I had appendicitis and had to have my appendix removed. It wasn’t anticipated and threw a wrench in my training and half marathon buildup. My goal half marathon was scheduled for the end of April. It is still on my plan, but a PR may not be in the plans. I couldn’t run for about 2 weeks. I did walk as much as I could during my recovery from surgery to try to maintain some fitness. I am cleared to run now, but I am not supposed to do intense running for a few more weeks, or as I feel is comfortable. Anyone who knows me, knows that this is extremely hard for me.
For those who are interested in the story behind my appendix here is a brief synopsis:
I went into the ER room early on a Tuesday morning after being in so much pain and up all night vomiting. Finally my mother and husband convinced me to just go in. I hate hospitals and didn’t want to go. The pain had started Sunday evening and then intensified. But with everything pertaining to my health, I put it off and didn’t say anything to anyone until Monday night because of the pain worsening. My mom watched the 2 oldest and we took the baby with us to the ER. I
My bloodwork came back fine and the ER doctor said it was just gas and severely dehydrated. I was surprised with this, because I drink water like crazy. He gave me anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I asked him if it was my appendix and he assured me it wasn’t. But seriously…..who goes to the ER for bad gas!! I, for one, do not go to the ER because I have bad gas. I was so irritated and knew that wasn’t the issue, because the pain was too intense for that. So to be told it was bad gas really didn’t sit well with me.
I spent most of the day in bed and by 4 pm, on that same Tuesday (not even 10 hours later) the pain was too great again that I decided I needed to go to the ER again. I was passing out because of the pain. It took forever to get in at the ER. Again my blood work came back fine, but I told the ER doctor I think it’s the appendix. He didn’t think so because of the blood work. I asked for the CT scan to make sure. Sure enough it was my appendix. I was then admitted and told I would have surgery early morning, because there was no surgeon currently available.
After a very painful and sleepless night, I started badgering nurses about when I would have surgery. By 8 am Wednesday morning, I still hadn’t seen a doctor and wasn’t scheduled for surgery. By 10 am I was infuriated, in pain and demanded I talk to a doctor as I was told I would have surgery early morning. I kept thinking, “what is wrong with these people. Don’t they know if your appendix bursts it’s bad news?!” Finally at 10:30 am, I think the nurses took me seriously, they said I was scheduled for surgery at 1 pm.
In surgery they found two hernias, which helps to explain all the pain I have been experiencing in my groin. One hernia on each side. I don’t plan to remove those until after my goal marathon, because again it’s a 2 week recovery time of no running. My appendix had oozed a lot of pus everywhere. I am thankful it did not burst. I spent another night in the hospital. Pumping and dumping and declining all pain meds so I could continue to nurse baby M. She wouldn’t take a bottle the entire time I was in the hospital, but my great big sis brought her to us a few times so I could nurse her. Needless to say my sister and mom had a heck of a time with little girl and a few sleepless nights of their own.
That’s the story in a small nutshell. It has been 3 weeks since being sent home from the hospital. I feel lighter without an appendix, just kidding it really feels no different, just sore around my incisions still. We are ready for our 4 day Easter weekend. Mariah is coming into town for a visit and my 3 littles are excited to see auntie. Did I mention there is only 5 more weeks of school after Easter…..WOOHOO!
We hope you all have a great Easter weekend, remembering God’s great grace and love for us and the Truth we have in HIM of eternal LIFE! What a great promise! Death has indeed lost it’s sting!
We will see you next week with some exciting health / fitness related posts.
Until Next Time Be Whole and Be Fit
